Spectre of Fu Manchu returns to Britain

“China could use its electric cars to attack the West” was the title of a commentary I recently read in the Telegraph. The article has even more eye-catching content: “Data espionage has become the signature weapon of the Chinese party state”. Several other major British media outlets ran front-page headlines last week about the so-called Chinese cybersecurity threat, “identifying” China as a significant threat to the UK. A wave of Sinophobia is sweeping across the country, reminding me of a name that Chinese people have long forgotten, Dr Fu Manchu .

This year many British universities are facing job cuts. The decline in the numbers of overseas students has resulted in at least 15 universities announcing redundancies. These have kept many universities afloat in recent years as they are charged higher fees. In Scotland these high fees are being blamed for squeezing out local students who get free tuition

Last Saturday it was reported that the number of rough sleepers in Glasgow had increased by 50 per cent. According to the housing charity, Shelter Scotland, 15,625 households are in temporary accommodation, including 9,862 children. That is more than double the figure from a decade ago and ten per cent up on the previous year. At the same time 750,000 people are unable to heat their homes and 1,500,000 people live in overcrowded unstable or unaffordable housing.

When campaigning in 2017 – seven years ago – Macron promised he wouldn’t cut pensions and that their purchasing power relative to inflation would be preserved.

China condemns provocative visit of Labour politicians to Taiwan

China has voiced firm opposition toward the ongoing visit to Taiwan this week by a “Labour Friends of Taiwan” delegation composed of some Labour Lords and MPs, saying the visit is a blatant violation of the one-China principle and a serious interference in China’s internal affairs, that also sends a wrong signal to the island’s separatist forces for “Taiwan independence.”
